(This comes from the novel that I am working on. I know that this is a Final Fantasy song and this is a ChronoTrigger fanfiction.. I can't help it, this is a song fic you could say. Enjoy.)
"Alone for awhile,
I've been searching through the dark
For traces of the love you left,
Inside my lonely heart.
To win by picking up the pieces that remain,
Melodies of life,
Love's lost refrain."
Magus stood there at the funeral byre where his beloved Corrine Graie lay so peaceful in her death. Reluctant to move yet not wanting to leave to give Toma Levin and Ozzie, Slash and Flea a chance to bow over her form. Tears had not come since the night he took her soul under the watchful eye of the Zeal moon. All for the sake of Lavos and a 'lost' cause, looking down and seeing his sadness taking shape in the lifeless form of his beloved. No more would she breath, look at him in adoration or love, or chastise him for the treatment of his minions. There was nothing that he could do to bring her back and forever seemed like a bleak prospect when he knew that he couldn't be with her. Everything he held inside and clutched the pure white handkerchief in his hand before he left it softly slip from his fingers, to the ground in a fluttery whisper of gauze.
Toma noticed the handkerchief dropped by Magus and stooped to pick it up once he reached his best friend's side. He coughed and held it out to Magus with a soft tranquil smile. "She was beautiful.. you were the lucky one to have been the one that she loved." Toma murmured softly and averted his eyes from Corrine's lifeless form, he didn't want to look on her too much, better to remember as if she were alive.
"Why didn't she take the life that I offered?" Magus uttered weakly as he once again slipped the gauze into his fingers and looked down at the nearly see-through fabric.
"Because she saw worth in your visions."
"Why can't I see that worth now that she is gone?"
"Our paths they diverge,
Though I cannot say just why,
We met, we left, we held on fast,
And then we said goodbye.
And who hear the echoes of stories never told,
Let them ring outloud,
Til they unfold."
Magus emmerged from the temple, still holding the handkerchief. Eyes still dry as they searched the winter sky. A few snow drifts fell around him as bleak melancholy enfolded his soul. There was no life, not only in the surrounding area.. but in his soul. The trees held no leaves, not even a sprout of grass fought through the ground. Only then he allowed himself to cry a few very real crystalline tears. They fell down his cheek, leaving traces of dampness that soon turned to ice. The world would know.. they would remember.. he would remember..
"In my dearest memories,
I see you reaching out to me.
Though you're gone,
I still believe you can call out my name"
There he was.. summouning Lavos to extract revenge. Coldly calm and serious, he called Lavos into being to make the sacrifice that Corrine made justifiable. If it didn't succeed then at least he would die, he would join Corrine in that abyss of death, that is if he wasn't tossed into hell first. It didn't matter, all that mattered was that Corrine's death -mean- something. Power accumulated in the room and he felt its seductive surge. Then he heard voices behind him right after the portal had been created. He turned around, sweeping his cape behind him and looked enigmatically at the intruders.
"Nice timing. kissed any princesses yet, Frog?"
"Voice from the past,
Joining yours and mine.
Heading up the layers of harmony,
And so it goes on and on.
Melodies of Life,
To the sky beyond the flying breeze..
Forever and beyond."
He suceeded, the shock of it coursed through his body as he stood off to himself, watching Chrono, Marle and the rest of the group rejoice and jump up and down. There was a glow in him though he didn't show it outwardly. He took out from under his tunic the necklace that held the ring, looking down at it with unreadible eyes. His wedding ring that lay close to his heart where it belonged. It wasn't only his victory.. or theirs.. it was hers.
"So what are you going to do next?" He heard a voice ask him, he turned around to look into Lucca's scholarly countenance, she was almost nice.. certainly not Corrine but there was a practicality about her which he respected.
"I am going to search for Schala.." Magus murmured and hastily tucked the necklace back underneath his tunic where it warmed his skin. That was what Corrine would of wanted him to do, to somehow right what had become wrong in the past.
"She might be dead after what happened at the Undersea Palace." Lucca said.
He felt the necklace give off a surge of power and smiled enigmatically. "I don't think she is dead." His own subtle declaration of hope.
"So far and away,
See the bird as it flies by.
Riding through the shadows,
Of the clouds up in the sky.
I've laid my memories and dreams upon the wings,
Let them go and see what tomorrow brings.
Standing there on the ruins of Zeal was Schala and his mother. They looked as if Lavos had not touched them and he wondered if by some strange coincidence the destruction of Lavos changed the past as well as the future. He stood there, looking at them before Schala noticed him.
"Janus!?" The woman with long purple hair called with disbelief as she ran toward him, her arms spread out wide as she caught him into her arms. He didn't return the embrace, he just bowed his head and let himself be held by this woman, by his sister. For so long they had been kept apart by fate but now they were together... brother and sister.
"Magus.." He insisted softly as his childhood name sounded foreign to him. He then reluctantly put his arm around her in a return embrace before she pulled away and looked at him.
"You have changed." She said with softly unreadable eyes.
In your dearest memories,
Do you remember loving me?
Was it fate that brought us close,
And now leaves me behind.
His mother, Queen Ileana Zeal walked up to him and looked at him, there was a bit of the aspect of the mother in her.. something that had been missing when he was a child, when she had been obsessed with Schala's magic.
"Do you forgive me, Janus?" She asked, almost afraid to hold her son for fear that he would look on her with hatred. All she saw was faint pity in those chameleon eyes, first grey, now brown.
Corrine would want him to forgive her, he thought to himself as he looked at the woman who betrayed so many dreams of a young boy. Perhaps there was hope, there was a future where he could love her and look up to her as a mother.
"I forgive you." Was all he said as he watched out of the corner of his eye Alfador bound out and rub up against his leg with purring glee. Recognizing in him the child "Janus" that he had been.
This was a chance for absolutions.. and new beginnings.
Voice from the past,
Joining yours and mine.
Heading up the layers of harmony.
And it so goes on and on,
Melodies of life,
To the sky beyond the flying breeze..
Forever and on.
A lone figure, he stood on the balcony of Zeal Palace and looked upon New Zeal and the shining lights of Millenia City in the distance. The sun was setting and casting a silvery sheen onto the tall platinum spires of the towers. From death sprouted life even when he had doubted it with all his heart and soul, so sick in his grief he had been. There were beautiful memories of Corrine, of their time on earth.. she hadn't just left him with nothing, but with a future.. with hope. With memories of their love. He held to the bit of love that his soul had tenaciously clung to and knew that would be enough.. enough to carry him through an eternity.
"Someday.. Corrine Linnea Graie.. someday.."
If I should leave this lonely world behind,
Your voice will still remember our melody.
Now I know we'll carry on,
Melodies of Life can circle round and grow dear in our hearts..
As long as we remember.."
(*saps* Okay I am done. I love that song.. *sniffles*)
(And no, it isn't the end.. *eg*)
